In The Study

This series of mixed media work is comprised of paper collage layered with acrylic paint, oil paint, and polyurethane enamel on wood panels.

At first glance, one image appears dominant but the closer in proximity the viewer moves towards the work, a variety of elements come into focus. Layers of paper are built up and torn away while paint is applied in varying degrees of refinement, drawing attention to particular sections of the piece. A montage of contrasting images under translucent metallic gold and newspaper text are revealed, suggesting narratives about differences and similarities between people, the struggle between action and inaction, and how value is given to life.

I am interested in how people see and construct systems of belief and how the impermanence of life can force one to question how to live. It is my intention that this work will stimulate a personal experience for the viewer that promotes an ongoing dialogue.
